When you change something in the settings, please restart FileMaker.
FileMaker caches the widths and shows dots if space doesn't fit.
Thanks @MonkeybreadSoftware, I had been restarting the application completely each time. The discrepancy I pointed to between script workspace and script debugger was there after a restart.
