Roadmap 2019

wrong… I was wrong

on premise means software that is installed on the client side, not a cloud based sw (not SaaS)

I was lead to a wrong path because quite some customers here do have a cloud-based version of fms -it’s installed on their IT’s site

I had to read the english wikipedia site, then it became clear that I dud not read the german site correct

Here’s the Mr Freitag’s announcement

I let Deepl translate that. Funny thing, that..

Did I heard that ETS is open to anybody ?

AFAIU*, seems so… You have to send an email to get part of that group

I will not - just not enough time, but would love to…

(*) as far as I understood

Good idea!

"FM Patch Tool to add/delete/replace schema" is how it was refered to in the slides.

That was a very interesting read with some funny sarcastic bits.

@LVZ the HVAC is a section of this forum where people who want to vent their frustrations can do so without hindering the rest of the readers (mostly because that type of discussion is not very productive and tends to polarize the views of the contributors)

For the full ‘About the HVAC’, please read: https://the.fmsoup.org/t/about-the-hvac-channel/182?u=bobino

It’s the soup composting rejects, a place to vent that is not moderated. Where you enter at your own risks. You must be member of the whine and geez group to have access. Anybody can register

We already have something like that : Its called “Product Ideas” on Claris’s website no less.
Horizontal Portal has been the number one request for years -no cigar!
To be fair, some ides have made it to the shipping product , but what about the most requested ideas.
So wonder what the new CAB will do!

Absolutely!!!

In some lost postings in a galaxy far, far away I’ve been an advocate of moving away from the annual updates and product numbering system for some time. I welcome this change wholeheartedly, assuming non-FMC users can control the timing of the update for minor things such as testing, compatibility, etc.

Gradually dropping in new features when the development team are ready to do so (please!) would be brilliant and it would also leave the marketing team to do something other than force incomplete software upon us all annually (Catalina?). Perhaps they’ll finally push the strengths of the FileMaker platform in a professional way that doesn’t involve banjos, farmers or whale song.

I think there is a danger that Claris may believe they are becoming a SaaS company and, as someone else has pointed out, this is far from the truth. They are attempting to become a cloud development platform, but this is a long way from, say purchasing a single license of an online accounting system to ‘do the books’, or creating documents, spreadsheets or processing email.

There appears to be a feeling of ‘uneasiness’ with recent communication content and methods, but there is also a huge amount to be excited about. The mere mention of an Android client, should have us jumping with joy and the other additions mentioned above should also be received enthusiastically.

I guess in the UK we’re learning to live with uncertainty, but there do seem to be signs of Claris ‘growing up’ as a company and starting to push forward. The danger of course, is that they push so far forward they leave their faithful developers behind.

I am slightly worried about Claris Connect, as once again, we will have another variable charging system, which is probably OK if you’re the end customer, but it makes it more and more difficult for us, who are trying to use FileMaker as a commercial application development platform, rather than WIP. I do have major concerns that a combination of inflexibility, or perhaps too much control and what could be yet another price increase for on-prems could force some of us to reevaluate our needs.

We’ll see.

It really sounds like Marketing is driving the bus.
IDK about the timing of updates - I want them when they’re ready and sensible and add value - not because 12 months (or less have elapsed).
IDK about the cloud at all - I manipulate file systems locally - that will always be premises server driven.
More dubious stuff they can justify $$$ with. Not very impressed.

I’m just hoping the app and the platform doesn’t go the way the Forum did - newer - shinier and way to difficult to get around in.
Only a few years till retirement - ah!

Welcome to the forum Tom.

Hopefully, with the new approach, we should finally be free of marketing led annual updates. I’m still taking the announcement as good news.

Hope you stick around.

A growing number of businesses got scorched in the ‘cloud’ (think for example of a cloud CRM outfit who locked out its customers out of their data for an entire week - even more for some).
There is a movement back from cloud to on-premise. If you are a small business in Europe and your US-based cloud outfit blows it, try reaching the hotline and get a firm back online date and time.

@AndyHibbs, uncertainty is improbability seen from a different viewpoint. Douglas Adams ( a British author, sic!) gave us a deeper understanding of it :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

You start to sound almost as sarcastic as I do. Do you know the difference between a Banjo and …

This annual update strategy was marketing driven and did not respect any schedules within the Dev. Dept.
You find my demands on Video from a FM Conference in Hamburg *): Somebody (Head of Product Management) should be held responsible for the quality of every new release. Same person should also be given the right to veto and to delay the date of launch.

Your analysis is absolutely correct :ok_hand:

*) sorry, I forgot: This is part of those 11 Minutes missing in the Video

Censored?

Let’s say it was removed by the Conference team. I can’t blame them. My speech (“How dare you?!”) and some of @Markus’ part.
I know we hit the wrong guy, but with the FMI VP sitting right behind us …

Did you read the 'letter from the CEO' (email)? The second thing they are going to change next release are the on-premise prices. The new prices will be 'simpler' LOL
