In some lost postings in a galaxy far, far away I’ve been an advocate of moving away from the annual updates and product numbering system for some time. I welcome this change wholeheartedly, assuming non-FMC users can control the timing of the update for minor things such as testing, compatibility, etc.
Gradually dropping in new features when the development team are ready to do so (please!) would be brilliant and it would also leave the marketing team to do something other than force incomplete software upon us all annually (Catalina?). Perhaps they’ll finally push the strengths of the FileMaker platform in a professional way that doesn’t involve banjos, farmers or whale song.
I think there is a danger that Claris may believe they are becoming a SaaS company and, as someone else has pointed out, this is far from the truth. They are attempting to become a cloud development platform, but this is a long way from, say purchasing a single license of an online accounting system to ‘do the books’, or creating documents, spreadsheets or processing email.
There appears to be a feeling of ‘uneasiness’ with recent communication content and methods, but there is also a huge amount to be excited about. The mere mention of an Android client, should have us jumping with joy and the other additions mentioned above should also be received enthusiastically.
I guess in the UK we’re learning to live with uncertainty, but there do seem to be signs of Claris ‘growing up’ as a company and starting to push forward. The danger of course, is that they push so far forward they leave their faithful developers behind.
I am slightly worried about Claris Connect, as once again, we will have another variable charging system, which is probably OK if you’re the end customer, but it makes it more and more difficult for us, who are trying to use FileMaker as a commercial application development platform, rather than WIP. I do have major concerns that a combination of inflexibility, or perhaps too much control and what could be yet another price increase for on-prems could force some of us to reevaluate our needs.
We’ll see.
