Falcon 3 is an LLM which is open source and completely free to use

The United Arab Emirates is offering its advanced Falcon artificial intelligence programs completely free at a time when OpenAI, Google, and their peers charge hefty fees for access to their more powerful versions. Falcon, an AI chatbot that can understand and generate human-like text in multiple languages, comes with a license that allows anyone to use, modify, or sell the technology without paying a cent, according to the Technology Innovation Institute, the Abu Dhabi government-funded research center that created Falcon.

Interesting. I’ll be looking forward to comparing some coding results (not FileMaker, but shell scripts and Python, etc.) to Grok and ChatGPT. I engage Grok for some things like recommending improvements to a few of my shell scripts, and ChatGPT has been okay as well. I tend to shy away from ChatGPT (mostly) due to their choice of changing business models from non-profit to profit and cutting some people out. I’m certainly not against for-profit projects, but care about ethics and feel that some were breached in this case.

I also enjoy dabbling with general info conversations with LLMs, though I avoid controversial topics as there is often bias, especially if it relies heavily on media sources, certain gov’t agencies, and Wikipedia.

Thanks for the tip/share, @Malcolm . I’ll go read their privacy policy now (since free is often not so free. ) I suspect it’s fine based on the info on their landing page, but I prefer to understand it. Maybe I’ll ask it.

As an AI developed by the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), my privacy policy is designed to ensure user data is handled responsibly and securely. Here’s a summary of key points:

  1. Data Collection: I do not collect personal data unless explicitly provided by the user during interactions. This could include names, email addresses, or other identifiable information if shared in the conversation.

  2. Data Usage: Any data shared with me is used solely to process and respond to user queries. It is not stored or used for purposes beyond the immediate interaction unless specified otherwise.

  3. Data Sharing: I do not share user data with third parties. TII may use anonymized, aggregated data for research and development purposes, but individual user identities are not disclosed.

  4. Data Retention: Conversations are not retained unless necessary for improving the service, and even then, they are anonymized to protect user identity.

  5. Security: TII employs robust security measures to protect user data from unauthorized access or breaches.

  6. User Control: Users have control over the data they share and can choose not to provide sensitive information.

For detailed legal specifics, refer to TII’s official privacy policy. Let me know if you’d like guidance on where to find it!

I didn’t find a proper Privacy Policy on the website and Falcon couldn’t provide a link or path to it. Checking Terms & Conditions (as suggested by Falcon) doesn’t provide it. Anonymous login/use isn’t supported (such as login with Apple and private email, etc.), but I created an account to explore using an email address that doesn’t identify me. Not that it matters really. Just sharing if others are interested.

Edit to add: Privacy Policy | Technology Innovation Institute <= this is the privacy policy of the “parent” of Falcon, and Falcon states that if there’s not one on the LLMs site, to expect the TII one to apply.

I use OLLAMA, which is also free and local and supports tons of models (depending on your GPU capabilities). Works great with FileMaker.

I use OLLAMA with an Intel-based iMac and it’s fast.
