My journey on the M1

I've had sudden freeze and restart (or shutdown last time) 3 times now (~ once a week). In august only, not before. Seems like software issue. There is no fix yet AFAIK, not even just recent 11.5.2. It's the first time I've had any issues with M1 macbook.

Other than this current issue, it has less issues than any other computer I've used so far in my life (lots of different pc win, linux and macs). So not too worried

Got my trusted i7 MacBook back from repair today, with a new battery installed. It is good as new.

We’ve 14ā€ and 16ā€ M1Pro MacBook Pros (in theory) arriving next week. Val is still using her 2013 MacBook Pro every day, which is still giving great battery life on the original battery and only a 512Gb SSD drive to replace the original disk as the sole change to the original. My M1 13ā€ M1 MacBook Pro is being passed on to a colleague.

However, I’ve just had to revert to running Microsoft Remote Desktop in Windows 11 in Parallels, which works great. As alluded to above, there is a freezing issue widely reported on the web, particularly when copying and pasting resulting in app freezes. In my case, this has made the Mac versions of Remote Desktop and the Beta versions unusable recently, with constant app freezes when connected to workspaces. This has crept in over the last couple of months, there was never any problem during the first 10-months of ownership.

I’ve dug widely on the web and none of the suggested solutions either work or do not apply to me (my MacBook doesn’t have any of the Extensions that are being recommended for deletion).

The problem seems most widely reported in Powerpoint and Photoshop, but I’m sure it is across a wide number of applications.

Hopefully, Monterey arriving with the new MacBooks will address this, but if anyone has any ideas other than disk repair or Extension deletions, I’d be interested in trying these.

The M1 MacBook Pro still remains one of my favourite Macs ever (from 36-years of ownership and use) and it runs Windows 11 so fast, that this doesn’t cause me any issues when streaming FileMaker.

Hi @AndyHibbs!
I am curious to learn how the new MacPros will fare in dev and admin work.
My girlfriend has a trusted 2013 15" MacBook Pro 16GB, 512GB SSD, which is used for office work and the occasional photo correction job. It still has enough power and space for all of this. If it updates to Monterey it will receive a new battery for another two years of operation.
I am still happy with the 13" M1 MacBook Pro. It has ample power for all the jobs I throw at it :slightly_smiling_face:

They do say old Macs never die @Torsten and we seem to be proof of this.

Unfortunately Val’s 15ā€ model is too old to update to Big Sur, so Monterey won’t be an option either.

It was the screens that did it for me. The eyesight isn’t what it used to be and the thought of watching Val on a 16ā€ Mini LED screen compared to my 13ā€ Retina (guess who has to carry their Mac around the most ) was the deciding factor. A little more real estate won’t do any harm either.

Other than that I’d have remained on the M1. As it is I’m begrudging the additional half pound in weight, but usually being able to leave the power brick and cable behind, still makes them compatible with the MB Air preceding these.

Kind regards
Andy

The new 14ā€ MacBook Pro arrived yesterday and has now been setup. A quick summary:

I really thought I’d be able to do a Mac to Mac migration as this was between 2 Apple Silicon Macs, but was disappointed to have to once again use a Time Machine migration. First I turned off FileVault on my M1 source MacBook, selected Migration Assistant’s transfer to another Mac option, but it kept reporting ā€˜Authentication failed. Unable to retrieve credentials for authorising user’, despite restarts and using Safe Mode.

However, I was optimistic about trying Startup Options -> Share Disk and do the equivalent of target mode. However, despite trying both Thunderbolt (Anker) and USB-C (Apple) cables, the new MacBook’s Migration Assistant couldn’t see the MacBook shared disk.

Finally I did quite a bit of web searching and there appears to be nothing about transferring files between 2 Apple Silicon Macs. The available information is mostly Intel to M1 Macs.

Post migration I have just finished 2.5 hours of pain, starting with an update to version 12.0.1 of Monterey! Then reactivating software that I have subscriptions for and, despite being logged into my subscription account within the app, many required me to enter activation keys by logging in to my account on their websites to obtain these (Parallels excels itself with the Desktop and Toolbox). The worst though was Geist Interactive, where FMPerception told me there as a new version available but our support needed renewing, so out came the credit card to enter $449.50 for our ā€˜Small Team’ license renewal, only to find that we were already on the latest v19 and that we’d also renewed our support in the middle of July. I’m now waiting for confirmation from GI for cancellation or refund of this double charge.

Apple required me to log into iCloud, then required another login from System Preferences to update my Apple ID settings. This just would not work, resulting with a force quit of System Preferences a few times. Finally, I had to log out of iCloud and then log in from scratch. My iCloud drive, notes, calendar, reminders, etc. are all still synchronising. Then the iCloud settings all had to be totally reset, with iCloud Drive having set every app to save files here (almost as bad entrapment as Dropbox offering to back everything up - both no doubt aimed at increasing their user subscriptions).

Thanks to Time Machine, the overall experience wasn’t too bad for someone with 36 years of Mac experience. I pity the average user though.

However, there were 2 positives:
FileMaker behaved impeccably. I’ve launched, but not used, versions 16 through to 19 successfully. I do expect issues as per those experienced on the M1 MacBook Pro, but none worse than these.

I’ve discovered Monterey’s best new feature - editing text in the Preview app now centre aligns when the centre align button is clicked and right aligns when the right align button is clicked. A major improvement over Big Sur (try it :joy:).

Now time to start work and see what is really going to happen.

Andy

I'm glad to report that Todd has promptly refunded our support renewal and my sense of humour has been somewhat restored now everything appears to be working.
