The new 14ā MacBook Pro arrived yesterday and has now been setup. A quick summary:
I really thought Iād be able to do a Mac to Mac migration as this was between 2 Apple Silicon Macs, but was disappointed to have to once again use a Time Machine migration. First I turned off FileVault on my M1 source MacBook, selected Migration Assistantās transfer to another Mac option, but it kept reporting āAuthentication failed. Unable to retrieve credentials for authorising userā, despite restarts and using Safe Mode.
However, I was optimistic about trying Startup Options -> Share Disk and do the equivalent of target mode. However, despite trying both Thunderbolt (Anker) and USB-C (Apple) cables, the new MacBookās Migration Assistant couldnāt see the MacBook shared disk.
Finally I did quite a bit of web searching and there appears to be nothing about transferring files between 2 Apple Silicon Macs. The available information is mostly Intel to M1 Macs.
Post migration I have just finished 2.5 hours of pain, starting with an update to version 12.0.1 of Monterey! Then reactivating software that I have subscriptions for and, despite being logged into my subscription account within the app, many required me to enter activation keys by logging in to my account on their websites to obtain these (Parallels excels itself with the Desktop and Toolbox). The worst though was Geist Interactive, where FMPerception told me there as a new version available but our support needed renewing, so out came the credit card to enter $449.50 for our āSmall Teamā license renewal, only to find that we were already on the latest v19 and that weād also renewed our support in the middle of July. Iām now waiting for confirmation from GI for cancellation or refund of this double charge.
Apple required me to log into iCloud, then required another login from System Preferences to update my Apple ID settings. This just would not work, resulting with a force quit of System Preferences a few times. Finally, I had to log out of iCloud and then log in from scratch. My iCloud drive, notes, calendar, reminders, etc. are all still synchronising. Then the iCloud settings all had to be totally reset, with iCloud Drive having set every app to save files here (almost as bad entrapment as Dropbox offering to back everything up - both no doubt aimed at increasing their user subscriptions).
Thanks to Time Machine, the overall experience wasnāt too bad for someone with 36 years of Mac experience. I pity the average user though.
However, there were 2 positives:
FileMaker behaved impeccably. Iāve launched, but not used, versions 16 through to 19 successfully. I do expect issues as per those experienced on the M1 MacBook Pro, but none worse than these.
Iāve discovered Montereyās best new feature - editing text in the Preview app now centre aligns when the centre align button is clicked and right aligns when the right align button is clicked. A major improvement over Big Sur (try it
).
Now time to start work and see what is really going to happen.
