Thinking about dumping AWS for local server

Sure, and post your code and I’ll be glad to help.

Good points.

Back before Apple essentially killed the wonderful MacOS Server for all my intents and uses, I had FDS setup locally also with port forwarding (with DDNS software to keep my dynamic IP in sync), but I never really liked all those firewall warnings about this user and that user trying to access various ports. AWS keeps that potential problem out of my network

My AWS testing server is FDS only. That server needs to be Internet-reachable for FMP (Ports 5003, 2399, and other ports for micro-services and MySQL). It’s important that given testing requirements I can instantly upgrade the server’s memory or other components.

Funnily enough that even though I keep my instance closed unless testing, Amazon still charges me about $7/month for an elastic (static) IP not connected to a running instance!

For my use, FMS just needs to work as a server. VNC adds a layer that doesn’t match client expectations.

Thanks for your reply.

The magic ingredient seems to be ‘pre-compiled’. I’d love to see this in FM.

For small office and similar workloads, FMS running on MacOS is a great team. Easy setup and maintenance, no extra server OS cost.

I also thought the same about macOS Server. Thing is some pieces were moved to macOS, like file sharing. Some other pieces like DNS server were removed, and Apple suggests people to use OpenSoftware - :worried: please don't censor my use of OpenSoftware - oups I did it again -replacements for these removed pieces. And some others are still there like OD.

So a Mac mini can still be used as server for FMS.
