Claris QoL item priorization

Hi Everyone, I simply want to bring to your attention this post where Claris is seeking input to assist them in prioritizing Quality of Life (QoL) features: Claris Community (English)

In a list of 10 items there are 6 items that shouldn't be there.

  • Field Indicator in Browse Mode
  • Permit scrolling in non-enterable fields
  • Value Lists - Sort by independent of second value
  • Value Lists - "Second Value" for Static List
  • Portals - Blank/New row on Top
  • Checkbox format - Single unlabelled

They should be implemented immediately without needing input from vox-pops.

These are items that are of greatest benefit to beginners and intermediate users who are reliant on good options for out-of-the-box behaviour. Advanced and professional users have probably worked around the lack of these features, but I'm sure they'd use them once they became available.

In complete agreement @Malcolm . The only thing I would say from the list is that using the field option 'Prohibit modification of value during data entry’ does allow scrolling if the field is set to allow field entry in Browse Mode and the data cannot be changed by the user. In the same way set variable by name can be achieved within calculations.

Today I’ve spent time trying to sort London post code stems in a value list for a customer, we were successful using byte order marks and Unicode sort, but there are over 100 stems and the system fell over after SW17 when we hit the 100 characters FileMaker uses to sort fields. As a result Value Lists - Sort by independent of Second Value received priority 1 form me.

Equally, I commend Claris for this initiative, but also disappointed that a script trigger for ‘OnRecordUnload’ or ‘OnRecordExit’ still isn’t seen as a priority.

Hi @AndyHibbs

I just wanted to call to your attention that, albeit more complex, there exist means to do custom value list sorting with support for more than 100 list items.

If you have not checked it out before, I would like to recommend one of @weetbicks 's (as always) outstanding blog posts which covers this topic, as well as much more:
