Did you copy this line directly into the Terminal? Then let away the {return… and so on.
The whole line is the code within the expansion tool Typinator. The {return} says that there is to insert a return and then {delay:0.1} make a little pause.
I call in the Terminal with my shortcut write#fmkey the expansion from Typinator. So automatically the lines with the returns and after each line a little delay are inserted.
Steve, we’ve been Mac users since the original 128k model. However, our company ethos has been (to try) to only work with software that plays fair on both platforms.
Back in our pre-database only days we had Retrospect for backups, FileMaker for databases, Timbuktu for remote support, etc. We respect both platforms.
Windows has some huge advantages over the Mac in some areas, not least backward compatibility. It depends on what your priorities are. Macs are without doubt brilliant to use, but every year we prepare for 3 months of having things fixed that have been broken, or things put back that have been taken out (like trying to snooze a Calendar appointment in Big Sur at the moment).
Thanks @Malcolm.
I have to mention that the shortcuts I use are the ones that naturally fit to my native language German. ^W for Werteliste - in English Value List. English speakers will probably better choose appropriate shortcuts for their language.
Use these characters for the modifier keys:
Command: @
Shift: $
Control: ^
Option: ~
Sorry that I could not better express it in my first post. My German is actually a little bit better than my English.
As a FileMaker developer... absolutely. As an Office Power User beurk... I have 365 macOS version of Office and the GUI seems to have hickups. Borders missing, no different shade for fields(so you don't know there is an empty field waiting for your input and you basically click in the blind until you find it! Excel is the worst. The scroll bars keep slipping off the mouse! Word functions are not located at the same place or missing. I'm miserable. I only use the mini now because I don't want to pay to upgrade all my software on my old tower (which still has 32k RAM I am frustrated to give up) but I tell you... I often think of dusting it off the box when I do anything else than FileMaker!
Wow, I don't understand. I have used Office 365, now Windows 365, on a Mac for about 9 months and was very happy with it. On my Windows computers I am now using Microsoft 365, even installed it on my Mac Mini and I don't see the issues in Excel or Word.
There is one advantage for Microsoft 365 on the Mac: you may select which apps you want to install. On Windows, noc choice: you have to install all of them .
Yes! Every year the same problem with testing, searching for compatibility issues with this or another thing.
Time flies! My main machine is on macOS 10.14, some others on 10.15, one probably on 10.13 - there is not enough time to test or upgrade.
When moving from 10.12 to 10.13 (or was it 10.14?), I had to go back because something on the network let the Mac hang. It finally turned out that it was the Synology-Software that was too old.. not an easy job to install those updates
Here, I need to do my work - no bricolage with components - and the older I get, the faster a year goes by..
To be honest, the last (here...) helpful new feature was the big mouse-pointer when shaking the mouse
And with every new macOS one FM version goes south...
I couldn‘t count the times I select entire text within any formula editor (Fields, Script-Function, HideObject, cf) and drag it „over the edge“ to get a text snippet backup on my macOS Desktop. Wouldn’t know how to do on PC.
It started to become a habit to start first line with a comment to declare focus, such as:
//Adresses::f_Adress_vertical
Let (

)
Recently, the battery of my trusted old iPad gave up and I acquired an iPad Air 4th generation for replacement.
It brings one valuable addition to the FM developer: sidecar. This is Apple's moniker for using the iPad as a second monitor.
When away from my desk, equipped with a super-wide-screen monitor, it is really helpful for debugging sessions. Having the UI on the Macbook's screen and the script debugger and data viewer windows on the iPad screen, it makes the debugging workflow much better and easier.
Not sure if there is a functional equivalent for Windows machines.
MBS is essential so MacOS. I need a Windows machine to deploy on that, and test, since some font and spacing differs enough to make a difference. I have programmed extensively on both and in other systems in the past, including workstations. It is more a matter of performance and editing environments and not the OS itself. FileMaker has a lot going for it, but needs many, many improvements.
