Uploading File to FMS19.6

I have a file I have been using as a local file. I want to put it on the server. Several months ago I did get it tp upload. But from my Desktop FMP196, I could not see the file under SHOW HOSTS. Somehow I got it into my Favorites. That worked for a time.

The file uses External Files that are on the FMS19.6. But I wanted to link FROM those to this file. Because I cannot see it in SHOW HOSTS that is not working.

I closed the file on the Server. I removed the file. I copied it from the REMOVED folder to my C:Drive. I opened the file.

I made sure the passwords were correct for the users. Admin - thill - ap are all me.

Under FILE -> SHARING I made sure that all three options had ALL selected under Network Access.

I closed the File. I re-opened it and tried to Upload. I got an error message.

I am not sure how to proceed. I am not sure where on my computer the log for uploading was written..

Hi @TKnTexas ,

look in the FMS 19.6 and/or FMP help files. The file you wish to upload does not seems to have an account without password, or maybe the file automatically opens with an account without a password.

Have a look at this page Database Server security settings

Under Database Server security settings, you will find :

Limit FileMaker Server to hosting only databases that require users to enter a password for Full Access privileges

In the Require Password-Protected Databases section, select Host password-protected databases only.

Notes

  • When this setting is enabled, you can only open databases with password-protected Full Access privileges for hosting. If you attempt to open a database that doesn’t require users to enter a password for Full Access privileges, an error message is written to Event.log and the database is not opened.

  • FileMaker Pro 15 and 16 check this setting when a FileMaker Pro user attempts to upload a database using the Upload to FileMaker Server menu item. When this setting is enabled:

  • FileMaker Pro 15 and 16 will not allow uploading of databases that have a Guest account using the Full Access privilege set, a Full Access account with an empty password, or a Full Access account with the password stored in the database using the File Options dialog box Log in using option.

  • FileMaker Pro 14 users can upload databases that are not password protected, but FileMaker Server 16 does not open them.

A [Full access] account must have a password. I guess that in the file you can't upload, a [Full access] account does not have a password.

In addition to @planteg advice, make sure that your privilege set includes FMAPP. Even though you are a [Full Access] user, you will not be able to login if that box is not checked.

My two snipped examples show the error message, followed by the Manage Security screen with Four Users with FULL ACCESS, all have passwords. The three yellow highlighted are ME.

FMAPP is enabled in the file.

I have successfully created more than 22 files that have been uploaded. All working well.

This is a great tool for me in my day-to-day. It is primarily layouts for the SHADOW Tables in the accounting software. I am capturing PDFs of the receiving documentation that links to the accounting tables.

I am hesitant to start it anew. The accounting software has awkward relationships. I can add Summary Fields and Calculation fields to the SHADOW tables

When working in the accounting software, when you look at something, it does not link to another part of its function. And it does not link to any images.

I am not going to adjust the FMS19.6 as the other 20+ files are working, others use those two. Currently the 'problem' file is my use but it would be helpful to two other users.

Hum,

looks like we are missing something. Did you have a look at the server console ? Maybe there is something in the logs that will provide more clues at what went wrong.

@Malcolm, any idea ?

is there auto-login active?

Did I understand that correctly? You have uploaded the file to the server, but it is not displayed in the host's file list?

Open the file locally and look under "Sharing › Share with FileMaker Clients...":
There is an option "Don't display in host's file list". This is probably activated. Uncheck the box and you will be able to open the file via the menu after uploading.

It WAS NOT displaying. No auto login. It was not checked to NOT DISPLAY.

I removed the file from the Host.

Opening it, locally, I checked to make sure FMAPP was checked. It was checked for ALL to access. It was NOT checked to HIDE. I checked to make sure all users with Full-Access had passwords.

I tried to up load the file. I got an error message that the file did not meet the criteria for security. So I am currently using locally, unshared

There are a couple of reasons for the server doing this:

  • a Guest account is using the Full Access privilege set
  • any Full Access account has an empty password
  • the password of any Full Access account is stored in the database (using the FileMaker Pro File Options dialog box Log in using option)

My guess is that "Log in as" is ON and the user you want to log in as has full access.

By the way, @TKnTexas, giving everybody full access accounts is a recipe for disaster. Hardly anyone needs full access. You have only given them all full access as a knee-jerk reaction to the current problem which is to get the database online.

How many of your users need to create a new table, or to be able to delete scripts and layouts? That's what happens: users who do not understand how things work will destroy your system. Switch those other users back to a sensible default like the data entry permission set.

Three of the full-access are ME. The fourth is the Accounting Software (Great Plains) Administrator (my back up).

Actual users to our small office is the Controller, Staff Accountant and myself. The GP Admin rarely uses any of the FileMaker for his day to day. Usually to see a copy of an invoice to check pricing for inventory.

Our use of FileMaker is two-fold:

  1. Consolidate date from the three companies' operation into one: all checks written or all invoices processed or all customers billed.
  2. Store PDFs of the processed transactions.

All data from option 1 is created by exports from GP to FMP.

We have one small solution that creates new data, our Data Center billing creates the monthly charges to import to Great Plains.

I wish the Controller and the Staff Accountant wanted to use FileMaker more. Excel is their tool of choice. Even the GP Admin could do some of his inventory work utilizing FileMaker, which we have discussed. He is comfortable with Excel.

As to the FILE problem. I opened with RECOVER. I have used Recover in the past. This time I got so many errors. I decided it was best to rebuild from scratch.

The solution's FileMaker table is to hold the scanned/imported PDFs of inventory receiving. Everything else is using "shadow tables". I have built a better interface (for me) of the purchase order/receiving from the GP tables. Using GP different parts of it are not linked... so look up .. make note .. change screens .. look up.

Their data is linked, just not "hot" linked. Mine is and I can see the PDFs of the receiving or the invoices processed against the receiving.

The rebuild did not take long and it is on the Server and working well.

@Malcolm and everyone who commented THANK YOU. I am not sure what "fubar'd" the file. Never had one like it before.
